Discover Our Journey to a Sustainable Organic Lifestyle

Explore the beauty of our organic oasis :

Witness our nurturing methods of growing food with passion and dedication as we harmoniously blend aquaponics and permaculture to cultivate fresh produce.

Our Journey to sustainable living started In 1998, when Neeno was diagnosed with a blood Cancer : Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, believed to be triggered by the pollution in Delhi. Research shows a correlation between proximity to busy roads and the prevalence of Leukemia cases, linked to benzene from automobile exhausts

During Neeno’s treatment for Leukemia, we consulted an Ayurvedic physician,

He advised us to go on a diet of organic food, freshly prepared for every meal.

He said the practice of cooking food, storing in a refrigerator and reheating it makes the food toxic for the body. Scientifically it is borne out that when food is reheated, it changes the molecular structure of the ingredients and they lose their nutritional value. So eating such food has no nutrition for the body and is detrimental to the health

He also advised that we should never consume processed foods, drinks, ready made foods, sauces or spice mixtures.

He said Ayurved does not prohibit eating meat , but do not eat red meat, broiler chicken laden with growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids to produce large chicken for the market.

Fresh fish, free range poultry, eggs are the non vegetarian protein sollution

We then moved to an organic lifestyle

All food is freshly cooked with organic produce using minimal cold pressed organic oil, herbs and spices. We use cooking utensils that are cast iron, glass or stainless steel. We do not use aluminum or non stick cookware. We don’t eat any processed foods, drinks. prepared spices or sauces. Everything is freshly prepared. All spices are organic, freshly ground, sauces are freshly prepared. Even Milk has various additives We buy fresh A2 cow milk from a local dairy, make fresh butter, ghee. yogurt, buttermilk, paneer, cheese.

We sourced food from organic farms around Delhi. cooking the freshly harvested organic produce into wholesome meals. We only use organic grains like wheat and millets. We bake our own whole grain sour dough bread.

This organic lifestyle helped Neeno build up immunity to combat the cancer and the numerous bouts of chemotherapy, medications recommended. Her cancer was eventually cured by a stem cell transplant in 2009,

Subsequently, she lives a normal healthy life The organic food and lifestyle helped Neeno combat her cancer and go through the treatments needed, however, the damage to her lungs from the treatments led to recurrent lung infections, and the doctors advised her to move out of Delhi’s pollution. Our son then bought a home in Goa and we moved there in the winters, coming back in the summers when Delhi Air was cleaner.

Our aquaponic journey started when we moved to our son’s home in Goa which was a double storeyed villa near the sea, but had little place to grow food. We discovered aquaponics as a means to grow a large amount of organic food in restricted areas and decided to grow organic food in our home.

A lush garden in the home of Peter, Singh and Neeno Kaur surrounded by various shrubs and flowering plants. A brick path on the right, leading through the garden, which features both grass and stone elements. This was converted into Aquaponics

We started the process in our Delhi home , where the original garden at the back of the Delhi house, was converted into a greenhouse with Aquaponics and Permaculture growing 3000 plants of vegetables, and two fish tanks growing 120 kg of fresh water fish : Carp, Rohu, Katla, using aquaponics, permaculture in media beds , without artificial fertilizer, pesticides, weedicides

We missed the beauty of a garden so we created a Japanese Garden in the corner of the greenhouse at the back of the Delhi Home. Two pools grow 50 kg of fresh water fish and 500 plants of vegetables, herbs, fruits along the verandah to the entrance of the home.

A lush green garden with a gravel path, various plants, a small seating area, and a wooden pergola overhead. Visible are brick pillars and a domed structure surrounded by foliage.

We created a 10 ft wide and 14 ft long 8 ft high climate controlled greenhouse on the ground floor, using dual inverter Air conditioner. This area grows 5000 plants of lettuce , green onions and spinach, microgreens in aeroponic towers and racks of trays. This provides us an income by the sale of 240 plants every weekend.

We continued our journey to be self sufficient in water and manage the waste in our home as a further step to sustainable living.

No waste leaves our home except recyclable waste. The kitchen and garden waste is composted yielding 30 bags of vermicompost a year to grow our food

The major problem in Delhi was breathing polluted poor quality air, which had forced us to leave Delhi in the winter months and move to our son’s home in Goa

We decided to take matters into our hands and develop an AQI 15 clean air home in Delhi

The entrance to our home is from the verandah , which we enter through beautiful old glass doors , flanked by a cooler panel 6 ft wide and 8 ft high which filters the air coming into our home

Wooden doors with stained glass panels, featuring blue and green geometric patterns, under an arched roof.

We designed and implemented a naturally cool clean air home.

Our home in Delhi stands out as a sanctuary, free from pollution , where :

the air quality has AQI 15, to WHO standards. With PM 2.5 = 5 and PM10 = 10 throughout the year, day and night.

Besides just clean air, our home maintains a naturally cool environment, where the temperature inside our home is 25 Degrees C even when outside temperatures are 45 Degrees C , eliminating the need for air conditioning.

This harmonious blend of pristine air, cool temperatures showcases the beauty of living in harmony with nature.

The air quality meter in our home shows PM2.5=5 and PM10=10 while the weather channel shows that Air quality in Delhi is Very Poor at 379

Air quality index display showing a very poor rating of 379 in Sainik Farms Colony, Delhi, with PM2.5 as the primary pollutant. It warns of respiratory illness risk with prolonged exposure, especially for those with lung or heart diseases.
Air quality report showing pollutant levels including PM2.5, CO, NO2, O3, PM10, and SO2, with ratings from 'Very Poor' to 'Good'. PM2.5 labeled 'Very Poor', CO 'Severe', NO2 and PM10 'Satisfactory', O3 and SO2 'Good'.

The Goa home was a double storyed villa with a 10ft wide patch along the front , side and back of the house, which was a limited area to grow any food. We converted the Goa home into an urban farm with greenhouses on the rooftops and around the home, growing 5000 plants of vegetables, herbs and fruits, and 3 fish tanks along the ground floor producing 120 kg of fresh water fish every year: Carp , Seabass and experimenting with fresh water prawns.

A lush garden scene with various green plants and vibrant flowers, including red and pink blossoms. A mix of potted and planted vegetation surrounds a stone structure. Blue pipes run above the garden site, visible in the bright sunlight.

The need for a garden then prompted us to set up an Aquaponic Japanese Garden at the entrance to the Goa Home

We entered our aquaponic urban farm into the Goa Competition for home gardens

Certificate from Botanical Society of Goa awarded to Peter Singh and Meenu Kaur for first prize in Organic Vegetable Garden category, signed by President Raj S Pai Panandiker and Secretary Miguel Braganza, awarded in 2017.

We won the first prize for organic home vegetable gardens every year for three years
